It's a gas called Carbon Dioxide which occurs naturally as well as being released when we burn fossil fuels. It's one of several so called 'greenhouse gases' which are thought to be warming the atmosphere and creating long term problems for the planet. Fossil fuels are natural fuels that have been created underground from rotting material left in pre-historic times from vegetation, forests and animals. The vast weight of the build up of earth and rocks above this over thousands of years compressed the matter into coal, gas, oil and we make use of these today in many ways. The problem is that vast amounts of Co2 are present in the fuels and these are released into the atmosphere whenever we burn the fossil fuels, for example in car engines. Therefore there is a big effort being made to develop new technologies such as electric cars. At present these are not yet entirely practical for several reasons but in time these and are technologies will one day replace all fossil fuel vehicles. Meantime though we can all switch to a lower petrol/diesel Co2 car to do our bit! How Do I Find Out My Current Car's Co2 Level? If you would like to know the current Co2 level of the car you are driving at present, you can find out by clicking here. |
